What is Indonesian Arenga Palm Sugar?

If you love coffee, baking, or just exploring unique flavors, you’ve probably come across Arenga Palm Sugar, often called gula aren semut in Indonesia. But what exactly is it?

Despite the name semut (which means “ant” in Indonesian), don’t worry—there are zero ants involved! It’s called that simply because the granulated form looks a bit like tiny ant colonies or fine sand.

This sweet treat is made from the pure sap of the Arenga palm tree (Arenga pinnata). Local farmers collect the sweet liquid, boil it down until it thickens, and then stir and sift it until it turns into golden-brown granules.

Unlike regular refined white sugar, gula aren semut has a deep, caramel-like flavor with a smooth, buttery aroma. Plus, it’s unrefined and has a lower glycemic index, making it a favorite natural sweetener for coffee, boba drinks, traditional snacks, and modern desserts!
